Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles through the skin. The needless are inserted at varying depths at specific acupuncture points along meridians on the body. The meridians are like channels that feed and connect every part of the body.
The purpose of inserting needles at these strategic points is to balance the energy or Qi (pronounced Chee) of the body. It is from imbalance that disease arises. Acupuncture seeks to bring the body back into balance.
Acupuncture, however is not the only therapy used by Oriental Medical practitioners. Oriental Medicine also includes herbal and diet therapy, exercises such as Qi Gong and Tai Qi and lifestyle tips to help balance the body and mind.
